The nineteen 20,s was the heyday of sophisticated style. The new wealth of the industrial Britain and the commonwealth had quite a liberating effect on the style of this period. In the, so called ‘roaring 20s’ a new wave of fashion and frivolity swept through England, mainly influenced by the trends of America.
The design of Badger suite, based on the black laquered 20’s screen found in the attics at the Lake , inspired the theme of the room. We gave the screen a glamorous twist by using mirrors ,making it into a striking headboard. Black grey and chrome highlighted with orange was typical of the sleek modernistic interiors of this period.
The chrome lamps, although very modern today are based on the style used throughout the 20’s and thirties. The sepia tinted black and white photographs we used to decorate the plain walls, was also popular, as a new generation was taking up photography for the first time. We used some great images of lakes and water to create a calmness in a very dramatic setting. I’m sure Noel Coward would have drunk cocktails in a room like this.
The Lake Country House is undergoing refurbishment of its rooms and suites in the main house. The style of the Heron Suit is based on the aesthetic period of the early 1900's , about the time the hotel was built. Stylized motives, such as bird and flowers were prominent in fabric design at that time. The large wall panels were chosen to show off one of these lovely bird and flower designs. Because it was more common for the wealthier classes to travel abroad at this time, continental style furniture started to become the decor of choice and we chose limed washed French style furniture to compliment the soft duck egg blue color of the walls. I think you will agree the finished article looks fantastic.
